Traditionally, top White House and congressional officials were reluctant to engage in tactics that could fundamentally change the separation-of-powers playing field. Knowing that majorities in Congress shift and control of the White House changes hands, there was a clear incentive to maintain balance. “That certainly does not seem to be [Sen.] Mitch McConnell (R-KY)’s way of governing,” Russell Riley, a presidential scholar at the University of Virginia’s nonpartisan Miller Center, told TPM. “That’s, ‘I will do whatever I can do right now and the future be damned.'”

The 2016 election was a scarring experience for the party, which believed it had a lock on the showdown between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. The lingering trauma of that nasty Election Night surprise feels more pressing than ever as the election draws nearer and the party gets a second chance to edge out Trump. But it still feels strange to see these two men at the top of the pack for a party that has changed so much in the past decade. After all, it's been 15 years since the Democrats nominated a white man for president, and they've done quite well without one. Barack Obama won two presidential elections, and while Clinton lost in 2016, she pulled in three million more votes than Trump.

Democracy Initiative to launch two new labs

Melody Barnes, co-director of the Democracy Initiative, said the lab selection committee reviewed a number of outstanding proposals from interdisciplinary teams featuring faculty from numerous UVA schools and academic departments before selecting Sechser and Vaidhyanathan’s projects. “Ultimately, we selected two new labs well-aligned with the Democracy Initiative’s mission – rigorous scholarship and research, enhanced opportunities for students to explore the practice of democracy in and beyond the classroom, and a commitment to engage policymakers, practitioners and the public,” Barnes said.
