A former Presidential speech writer's got some last minute advice for Donald Trump. The Presidents expected to boast about the US economy and outline his legislative agenda in his first State of the Union address to Congress. Mary Kate Cary, who wrote speeches for George Bush Senior, said the aim is to appear unified with the rest of the house.
The stories swirling around President Trump's disdain for FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe helped to clarify one thing: Trump's deep devotion to the politics of humiliation, writes the Miller Center's Nicole Hemmer.
“We know his strength is the campaign style and the tweet,” says the Miller Center's Barbara Perry. “That's what he does to reach his base, and he does that very well. What I would say to the president is be presidential—this is your opportunity to do that."
The Miller Center's Barbara Perry said anointing someone as "survivor" during a big event like the State of the Union could come down to whether the president will be talking about a particular department in his speech, which would require the cabinet secretary to be in the audience so cameras can pan to him or her.
